If you’re a fan of Westone’s 2D platform adventure games, you’re going to love this week’s news. First off, a biggie: Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap is being given an HD remake. The original game, which was voted best Master System game ever by Retro Gamer readers, saw our hero cursed and given a non-human form the events of Wonder Boy In Monster Land.
The new version is being developed by Lizardcube, a developer founded by Omar Cornut (Soul Bubbles, Tearaway) and Ben Fiquet (Soul Bubbles and comics), and has a distinct European comic aesthetic to it. You can see that in the trailer above. The game will be published for consoles and PC by DotEmu, which recently released Pang Adventures, and has original director Ryuichi Nishizawa on board to oversee production. You can see the official website here.
That’s not all, though – elsewhere, FDG Entertainment has been hard at work on a brand new game in the series, Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom. This also has Ryuichi Nishizawa on board, and is an all-new adventure which brings back the animal transformation mechanic from Wonder Boy III. PS4, Xbox One and PC versions are confirmed to be in development. The most recent update was made on June 1st, showing off the game’s new cave area and other environments – take a look at these below, and visit the official website here.
