Bitmap Books has launched the Kickstarter campaign for the latest in its line of Visual Compendium retro gaming books, and once again Nintendo is the focus. The Unofficial SNES/Super Famicom: A Visual Compendium follows the success of Bitmap Books’ previous effort, which focused on the incredibly popular 8-bit NES console.
If you haven’t seen one of Bitmap Books’ Visual Compendium books before, they’re lavishly produced tomes which focus on treating the eyes – screenshots show off the pixel art behind each game, and photographs that show up the old hardware beautifully. There’s also some text, often comprising small interviews with developers, contemporary journalists and other influential figures. Prior to the NES edition the books were home computer-focused, with Commodore 64, Amiga and ZX Spectrum editions being made available.
The Unofficial SNES/Super Famicom: A Visual Compendium has already smashed its £25,000 funding goal and is rapidly closing in on £100,000 as we write. Copies of the book start at £10 for a PDF or £25 for a soft-cover physical edition, and further funding will go towards stretch goals including extra pages, a slipcase and a lenticular cover.
