It’s been more than two years since it was announced that a live action/CG animation hybrid Sonic movie is being made. However, it wasn’t until today that we got to hear about who is making the film. So now that we know some details, let’s take a look at who the folks making this thing are:
Jeff Fowler from Blur Studio is directing the movie. While it’s not known which in particular were directed by him, he has worked on various CG cutscenes and trailers for video games. He also wrote and directed the short Gopher Broke back in 2004, and wrote the 2006 short A Gentlemen’s Duel. He has also been working on an animated adaptation of David Fincher’s The Goon.
The writers are Patrick Casey and Josh Miller. The duo are probably most well known for creating and writing the majority of Golan the Insatiable. Aside from that they wrote the Sad Slasher shorts, and have written a bunch of not-that-well-received movies including Transylmania, Shotgun Wedding, Dorm Daze, and Dorm Daze 2.
There are also a whole bunch of producers attached to the movie. First off there’s Neal H. Moritz, who is the founder of Original Film and has produced a ton of movies including the Fast and the Furious series and 21 Jump Street. Then there are Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi from Marza Animation Planet, the studio behind the CG cutscenes for just about every Sega game this past decade as well as the fan favourite short Night of the Werehog. Finally there are Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons of DJ2 Entertainment, who are currently producing movies based on Blacklight and Life is Strange.
And finally there are the executive producers. Tim Miller is probably the most noteworthy of all the people working on Sonic, mainly cause he directed Deadpool. He is also the founder of Blur Studio, and thus has worked with Jeff Fowler before. Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, he had this to say about Jeff directing Sonic:
“Jeff is an incredible director with strong story instincts. The world of Sonic presents the perfect opportunity for him to leverage his experience in animation to bring new dimension to this iconic character.”
Finally, Toby Ascher of Original Film is executive producing too, and Andrea Giannetti will oversee the production for Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Also worth pointing out is that Van Robichaux and Evan Susser, who were previously reported to be writing the movie’s screenplay, no longer seem to be involved. Instead they went on to write the screenplay for Fist Fight, which stars Charlie Day and Ice Cube.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is currently scheduled for release in 2018. As for when the movie will actually release: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
