If you’re anything like us, you might have missed the Kickstarter campaign for Game Atelier’s Wonder Boy-inspired Flying Hamster II: Knight Of The Golden Seed. It wouldn’t have been hard to do so, as the crowdfunding effort was cancelled three weeks in after FDG Entertainment stepped in to realise the project. Nine months later, the team has returned with a fully rebranded game, now called Monster Boy And The Wizard Of Booze.
The most exciting announcement for the game is that Ryuichi Nishizawa, the original designer behind the Wonder Boy series, is involved in the development of the game. As such, the team considers it a continuation of the series, though it can’t be named as such because Sega owns the rights to the Wonder Boy name. The game has had a visual overhaul as a result, and looks to be much closer to the Wonder Boy games in style. Music will be provided by Michiru Yamane, the composer behind games such as Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra: Hard Corps and Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night.
If you’ve missed the Wonder Boy series up until now and you’re wondering where to start, don’t despair – Retro Gamer issue 137 is available digitally via GreatDigitalMags.com and features the Definitive Wonder Boy.
