It seems like the best advertising a game could ask for is actually in cinemas. On the back of Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is now the highest-rated installment of the series on Steam.
At the time of writing, the 11th mainline Assassin’s Creed game has a lovely 89% positive Steam review rating. That now places it above the previous top-tier entry, the long-reigning Assassin’s Creed 2, which has 86% on Valve’s marketplace based on overall reviews.
Unfortunately, Renaissance-era Italy isn’t anywhere to be seen among this year’s biggest films. Homer’s Odyssey, on the other hand, happens to be the source material for the man behind Inception, Interstellar, and The Dark Knight’s new cinematic venture.
Nolan adapts the epic poem with all the grandeur and spectacle you’d hope for. You’ve got a gigantic animatronic cyclops, a healthy amount of body horror, the Trojan Horse, Scylla and Charybdis, and plenty of the twists and turns from the classic tale.
The picture has proven to be one of Nolan’s biggest, bringing in over $1.446 billion at the box office globally. Not bad for yet another film where Matt Damon needs to find his way home, and the catalyst for an enormous boon in interest for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
I mean, it makes sense, right? You come out of a screening, mesmerized, then go looking for a similar game, to find Ubisoft made a nice big open-world adventure set in ancient Greece. Perfect. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is enjoying a similar crossover, since Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now the fifth highest-grossing film ever.
Funnily enough, Tom Holland stars in both movies. Jon Bernthal co-stars in them too. Maybe their combination is the secret ingredient. Sadly, I don’t think more marketing departments can afford them, never mind bankrolling a Hollywood production.
