A very early prototype ROM of Rayman for the SNES has been dumped and released online, with the apparent backing of series creator Michel Ancel. The release was aided by Omar Cornut, a long-term videogame preservationist best known for his work at SMS Power! and on the recent Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake project.
The ROM is a very basic proof of concept demo – though it features Rayman’s trademark limbless animations and some beautiful background art, there’s not a lot to do due to the lack of enemies and obstacles in the stage. Still, it’s a neat bit of videogame history, and Ancel has stated his intention to find the later builds of the game.
