Watch Darran And Nick Fail At Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts

Have you ever wondered just how the Retro Gamer team would fare when they step away from the keyboard and put their skills to the test? Wonder no more, as Darran and Nick have picked up the SNES pad and dusted off Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, Capcom’s fiendish platform game. If you already know Capcom’s platform series, you’ll be aware of just how challenging the games can be – to say that they’re hair-tearingly frustrating would be an understatement.

For those of you that have never borne witness to the series, prepare yourselves for a rough ride. While Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts is easier than the likes of Ghosts ‘N Goblins, it’s still a challenge for even seasoned platform veterans. A constant onslaught of randomly generated enemies is the very first thing you’ll encounter, and your power-ups are randomised too. What’s worse is that chests don’t actually always contain power-ups, with some housing wizards with a desire to ruin your day. You’ll also have to battle shifting terrain, and even a tidal wave that washes the ground away – and that’s just on the first level. Oh, and you’ve got to go through the game twice to see the proper ending, as per series tradition.

Despite all of this we love Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, because it’s a great game that combines very strong visuals with a memorable soundtrack and a cool Halloween vibe. Of course, loving it and acknowledging its greatness doesn’t necessarily make us any good at it, which is why we failed so hard in this video. Can our hapless staff make it past the first level? You’ll just have to find out…

PS: We’re better than this normally, we were just having a really tough deadline. Honest, guv. Don’t take it as an actual reflection on our gaming skills…
