Rockstar has just released a massive pile of new GTA 6 screenshots, and even after seeing nearly 30 minutes of 4K gameplay last week, there are a few new details to pick apart in these stills. Sure, there are displays of cars, weapons, locations, and sick outfits for Jason and Lucia, but I keep coming back to this one picture of an iguana.
Seriously, if the image above does not fully communicate why I’m looking at this iguana so intensely, go check out the 4K original on Rockstar’s official website. Zoom in, and start counting scales. Every single scale on this little (big) guy is fully visible, in sharp detail, from head to tail.
Of course, Rockstar is already known for ridiculously detailed animals, as Red Dead Redemption 2’s horses are famously some of the most lovingly rendered creatures in gaming, right down to testicles that grow and shrink depending on the temperature. But that’s a cowboy game – one where horses are central to the experience, as are all kinds of other little varmints you’ve gotta track, hunt, or avoid.
It wouldn’t be out of pocket for us to see an iguana model this detailed if, say, this were a AAA game about keeping iguanas as pets. But this is a game about stealing cars and robbing banks. You’ll probably look at one of these iguanas for a couple of seconds, tops. Rockstar might be the only studio in the world willing – and more importantly, able – to invest its resources into such minute details.
Maybe the iguana we’re seeing here is a hero model that’ll be front-and-center for a brief establishing shot in a cutscene or something. But there’s still no reason for it to look this good. Other than, of course, Rockstar’s desire to absolutely dazzle us with an uber-detailed sandbox.
