Four years later, Peggy Carter star Hayley Atwell has spoken out about how disappointed she was over her fleeting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness cameo.

“I loved the idea that she’d be in a suit and have the shields. But if I’m really brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened in that scene. It’s so small, and she gets frisbee’d to death,” said Atwell at the For the Love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy festival via francesinlondon on Instagram. “I felt like that was a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character.”

The scene takes place partway through the Doctor Strange sequel when Captain Carter shows up and fights the Scarlet Witch. Captain Carter is an alternate version of Peggy Carter, who is her respective universe’s Captain America, or rather, Captain Britain. In that timeline, Carter takes the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers and dons a Union Jack print suit rather than Captain America’s American flag get-up.

During a fight with Wanda, Carter throws her vibranium shield at the Scarlet Witch, but she catches it and throws it back, slicing Carter in half. There, Carter’s brief cameo comes to an end. Atwell revealed that she was concerned about the scene right away, adding, “I tried on set to kind of go: ‘Can I just add, can I just suggest,’ and they were like, ‘Sure, but no.'” The scene was a real kick in the teeth for the character, considering that the Earth-616 Peggy Carter is also dead. Peggy will have time to shine once again in Avengers: Doomsday. Although we have yet to see Carter in any promotional material, the star has been confirmed as part of the cast. This is not too much of a surprise, as Chris Evans’ Captain America is a big part of the movie, and the last time we saw Rogers, he went back in time to be with Carter. It is not clear what version of Carter will appear, but Atwell has previously said she would love to return as Captain Carter in either Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
