The Witcher 3 “is not a monument” says lead writer ahead of Songs of the Past, which means “adding a new expansion is not such a huge deal”

September 16, 2026 / admin / retro news

No video game is perfect, regardless of how popular or enduring they are. The Witcher 3 is no exception, and on the back of the upcoming remaster, one lead developer makes it clear he’d revisit quite a bit of the massive RPG.

“For me, The Witcher 3 is not a monument and is not untouchable. It is still vivid in my memory, and it is still something that is not maybe a point of reference, but something that still may be improved,” Marcin Blacha, lead writer on The Witcher 3 and now vice president of narration at CD Projekt Red, tells PC Gamer.

“When I’m playing The Witcher 3, I still find some places that I think maybe nowadays, I would do it differently.”

I can understand this mentality. There’s a lot to do in Wild Hunt, and since it’s been over a decade, Blacha’s now got the value of hindsight in what could’ve been more efficient or better.

Not only is the base game about to get a sizable lick of paint, but there’s an expansion coming too, Songs of the Past. They provide a decent amount of changes and additions to the 11-year-old game between them, and Blacha found the whole process to be invigorating creatively.

“Adding a new expansion is not such a huge deal,” he explains. “In fact, discovering we still have it, you know, we have this thing, and we are still able to create a story that fits not only vanilla Witcher 3 but also Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. It is still a very uplifting feeling – a time machine that brings me 10 years back, when I was younger and maybe more passionate and more enthusiastic.”

To compound what he’s talking about, the chain weapon Geralt uses in Songs of the Past was an idea for the base game the team couldn’t figure out in time. It seems like the devs still have more to say in The Witcher 3, and more power to them for making good on those opportunities still.

And it helps that Songs of the Past will take the edge off waiting for The Witcher 4.

The Witcher 3’s Songs of the Past expansion wouldn’t be “possible” without the RPG’s remaster, says CD Projekt Red: “The stars had to align.”
