World of Warcraft: Forever has a new race you can’t get without paying $30, and it’s not the first impression fans were hoping for: “They are just blue elves”

September 15, 2026 / admin / retro news

Blizzard gave WoW Classic+ hopefuls the news they were hoping for this past weekend during the BlizzCon 2026 reveals with a first look at World of Warcraft: Forever – a reimagining of the 21-year-old MMO’s nostalgic beginnings.

In case you missed it, it ticks all the boxes and then some, with revamped visuals, a plethora of new quests, and much, much more… including a never-before-seen race, the Skyborne.

While that sounds incredibly exciting on paper, there’s a bit of a catch: the Skyborne will cost you, and it’s not cheap. In fact, it’s at least $29.99, as per the official World of Warcraft website.

I say at least because it’s DLC of sorts, and there are a few options. There’s the Skyborne Epic Pack for some $20 more, and the Warcraft Forever Collection for a whopping $79.99, for example.

While these two come with more than just the Skyborne race – which is admittedly stunning, appearing as a soft periwinkle-skinned take on elves – the base $30 purchase is just to access the Skyborne come World of Warcraft: Forever’s release in November… and, unsurprisingly, folks aren’t thrilled.

Just have a search over on Reddit, and you’ll find countless threads discussing the Skyborne race and its hefty price tag. Heck, there’s even a huge “Skyborne feedback” post, given how hot a topic this is.

“I’m extremely positive about WoW: Forever and I’ll be playing day one with high hopes,” one comment reads. “That being said, not a fan of this race. They dropped the ball on that part.”

It’s not just the price, though. Others take issue with the fact that the Skyborne just… feel out of place.

As one person puts it, “From the aesthetic to the druid forms and mostly the blue variant has a weird retail vibe I just can’t describe.” Another dubs this a “mindbogglingly strange decision” on Blizzard’s part, while many more consider it counter-creative. “They are just blue elves,” after all – much like Night Elves.

“Should have been something else,” one fan complains. “Something more interesting and new.”

Honestly, there’s a lot more to read through regarding the Skyborne controversy, from the race’s price to its potential lore-breaking implications, but I do still have to admit I’m on the fence about it all myself.

I don’t like the paywall or the lack of faction identity, but I find the design quite nice aesthetically.

I suppose the community will be split on this one as it is on just about everything, and that’s that – ’tis the nature of MMOs, I fear. Blizzard also has yet to speak on the Skyborne debacle yet itself, but I’d advise keeping an eye on its channels.

World of Warcraft 2 isn’t happening because Blizzard isn’t sure what a sequel to the MMO would “give you that World of Warcraft: Forever isn’t already giving you”
