Fear Effect Is Back

It’s good news for fans of Fear Effect today, as indie developer Sushee has revealed that it has secured Square Enix’s blessing to crowdfund a brand new entry in the previously dormant action-adventure series. The project has been made possible through Square Enix Collective, a scheme in which Square Enix evaluates potential crowdfunding projects and can grant access to old IP.

The new game has been inspired by Shadowrun Returns, and looks to offer a rather less cinematic experience than the two existing games in the series – not a surprise, given the drastic difference in budgets. However, original director John Zuur Platten is providing assistance with writing and the story of the game will follow on from Fear Effect: Inferno, the unreleased third game in the series which was cancelled following restructuring at former publisher Eidos.

If you missed the first two Fear Effect games, they originally appeared on the PlayStation at the turn of the century. The original game, released in 2000, utilised a distinctive cartoon style and told the story of a trio of mercenaries, Hana, Deke and Glas, and their attempt to kidnap a girl named Wee Ming. Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, the 2001 prequel, followed the original cast plus a fourth character Rain, and was memorable for its sex-driven advertising campaign.

The new game is title Fear Effect Sedna, and will launch on Kickstarter Tuesday 12th April. In the meantime, check out the trailer above.
