Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s physical disc still requires a download because Square Enix “didn’t want to make any compromises”

September 10, 2026 / admin / retro news

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch on a physical disc, but there’s an important caveat in that the game still requires an online download. That’s in contrast to the previous two parts of the remake trilogy, which launched with multiple discs containing the entirety of each respective game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi says releasing the entire game on disc would’ve meant compromising on the RPG’s quality.

“When we had an internal discussion with the development team about how we wanted to approach the physical discs and the physical releases of FFVII Revelation,” Hamaguchi tells IGN, “initially there were conversations about using the same disc size as we did for, say, FFVII Rebirth. But if we were to do that, it would mean that we would have to make a compromise in terms of the fidelity and the quality of the game. So as a development team, we didn’t want to do that. We didn’t want to make any compromises for the game.”

I very much wish that Hamaguchi had gone into more technical details here, because it feels like the answer is obvious: just put more discs in the box. The physical versions of Rebirth and the original PS4 release of Remake each featured two discs, after all. Would Revelation’s file size have stretched it out to three discs, or more? Would three discs have been too expensive for Square Enix to justify manufacturing? Is there some technical limitation on the console making a three disc version impossible? Hamaguchi doesn’t elaborate.

“Realistically, the only choice that we had was to release this physical disc, but with certain sections of the game being a digital download format through the physical disc,” he concludes. “With that being said, I completely understand that not all players might be happy with this decision, but at the same time, I am happy that we were still able to release a physical format of the game. So I am quite satisfied with the end results as well. I would hope that our fans and players would be able to share that as well.”

There are two primary benefits to physical games. One is that you have a physical object that you can lend, trade, give away, or sell whenever you want to. The other is that – in theory – you’ve got a permanent archive of that game which you can continue to play long after patching servers shut down. I’d take having one of those things over getting neither of them, but I wish I wasn’t having to compromise at all.

Tired of digital everything, more people are buying physical media: CD sales are up 58% and vinyl records jumped 17%, according to new report.
