Final Fantasy Resonance is part of a “resurgence of turn-based RPGs and JRPGs,” lead dev says, who wants to capture the “appeal” of the classics

Final Fantasy Resonance’s director says the upcoming throwback JRPG is part of a “resurgence” of turn-based games, though one that still has plenty of fresh ideas.

Wrapping up a chat with RPG Site at PAX, director Hiroto Furuya says we’re in the middle of a “resurgence of turn-based RPGs and JRPGs” – which sounds pretty darn good to me. And if that sounds pretty darn good to you, the Final Fantasy Resonance devs hope the Final Fantasy Brave Exvius refresh might be of interest.

“Looking at the recent wave of things globally, it seems there’s a resurgence of turn-based RPGs and JRPGs,” he says. “It is kind of like being re-examined once more.

“We consider Final Fantasy Resonance as one aspect of that overarching wave or trend. I think there is something to note about the appeal of classic RPGs, and the fun of classic RPGs, really. We’re trying to capture that through Final Fantasy Resonance – but not stop at that.

“We wanted to ensure that we’re delivering a new experience, a new title, to audiences all around the world.”

Having played the demo myself, I can see part of what Furuya means. Final Fantasy Resonance is very much playing the hits – you’ve got crystals, chocobos, and a mixture of magic and machinery. More to the point, though, there’s a turn-based battle system with some deeper series cuts. There’s an order to who moves next, but filling a foe’s stagger meter shakes that up – and ensures you’ll get a window to deal increased damage.

What I’ve most enjoyed, though, is that the visuals and action are really dialed up to 11. The art style remains the HD-2D style popularized by Octopath Traveler, though cutscenes, both mid-fight and in-story, really deliver a sense of spectacle.

Of course, when Furuya talks about the trend of turn-based RPGs and JRPGs, it goes beyond what Square Enix has managed to accomplish with the Octopath series and other HD-2D remakes. Atlus has been holding down that fort for a while with the likes of Persona and Metaphor: ReFantazio, and genre love letter Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has won so many awards it’s hard to ignore. Speaking of awards, the J’RPG is only really rivaled in recent times by Baldur’s Gate 3. I’m starting to think there’s something to these turn-based games.

Final Fantasy Resonance appeals to my inner child like no RPG since Chrono Trigger.
