Xbox is forming a whole division in response to the vibe-coded game recomp explosion

October 13, 2026 / admin / retro news

Every day seems to bring another announcement of a classic console game getting a fresh recomp allowing it to be played on modern PCs. Many – though not all, and certainly not the best – of those recomps are powered by AI coding, and the wave of community interest in these projects is helping to inspire a new initiative at Microsoft called Xbox Labs.

What is Xbox Labs? According to Xbox boss Asha Sharma, it’s “a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience.” If that sounds vague, well, it’s because it is – but according to a memo sent to employees and published on the Xbox Wire, it’s inspired by a wave of community development efforts including recomps.

“In recent weeks, we’ve seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support,” Sharma writes. “Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we’ve seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another.”

Sharma adds that it’s “easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators. These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.”

What is Xbox Labs doing that previous backwards compatibility efforts, including the one that brought a selection of OG Xbox games to PC just a few months ago, could not accomplish? There’s no real stated end goal in the announcement, but recomps tend to offer more robust options for visual and gameplay improvements than straight-up emulation does.

And, of course, many recent recomps have been vibe-coded, and AI coding seems to be a siren song for Microsoft. “I think XBOX has an important role to play here. Coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software. Games share many of those same properties,” Sharma writes.

Some of the devs behind the most notable classic game recompilations out there have taken staunchly anti-AI stances, but there’s no denying that the size of the current recomp wave is thanks in large part to AI. There’s a Bloodborne PC port with full multiplayer, a Mario Kart Wii PC port, and a new PC port of the OG Crash Team Racing, all of which have – as many fans would argue – been spoiled by AI.

“LABS gives us a way to explore new technology without abandoning the work already underway,” Sharma concludes. What results will that new technology provide? Your guess is as good as mine.

Epic Games undergoes “huge pivot” for “maximum AI acceleration” amid reports of Disney shooter delay due to the controversial tech.
