The beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is currently underway, and the next patch will focus on fine-tuning time-to-kill. Complaints have been coming in about how quickly players are getting popped, leading developer Infinity Ward to get under the hood of various weapons in the FPS.

The studio tweeted about the incoming changes earlier today, August 24. “Another [Modern Warfare 4] Beta update is headed to you soon,” says the post. “We’re working on adjustments for several weapons that will increase the minimum TTK. Bug fixes too.”

If it’s not obvious, time-to-kill – or TTK – refers to how long it takes to bring someone down from after you first pull the trigger through to their actual death. It’s the kind of thing you probably don’t actively think about, but would notice if it’s too off-kilter, either because it’s taking too long to get a kill, or you feel you’re dropping too soon.

From the sounds of things, it’s an issue across much of the inventory in the upcoming shooter. Tinkering with even just a few of the guns requires careful attention, because any overcorrections will just breed other problems.

For a franchise that’s been going as long as Call of Duty, what feels right can be a matter of perception. One back-and-forth in the responses to Infinity Ward’s tweet demonstrates this perfectly.

A fan says the TTK should be more like Ghosts, because that “was perfect.” But then, in a reply to that one, another player shoots Ghosts down and says that Modern Warfare 3 should be the benchmark.

I’m sure the devs have their own goals and ideas of where these numbers should land. Infinity Ward says fuller patch notes are coming tomorrow, so we’ll see then how much gameplay is to be impacted.
