John Romero and Adrian Carmack, two of id Software’s four founding members, have reunited to launch a Kickstarter for their new first-person shooter project Blackroom. At id Software, the two were involved a succession of games which popularised the genre, including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. Blackroom marks their first project together in 20 years, following Romero’s departure from id Software.

Blackroom concerns a major malfunction with a holographic simulation device at the world-leading tech company HOXAR. Dr Santiago Sonora is tasked with entering the simulations and finding out what is causing the simulations to blend with each other – and seemingly something far more sinister too.

The game is being developed by Night Work Games for PC and Mac with an intended release date of winter 2018. John Romero will be leading the project and Adrian Carmack is on board as art director, with famous metal guitarist George Lynch providing music. Further details are thin on the ground though, with only concept art to show thus far. In order to succeed, the project will need to raise $700,000 by May 28th.
