Sega Announce ‘Sonic Mania’ 2D Throwback To Sonic The Hedgehog Classics Due 2017

Sonic-Mania-AnnouncedLast Night SEGA hosted a 25th anniversary event for their flagship character at San Diego Comic Con where they showcased not one, but two brand new Sonic The Hedgehog games. Fans of the series who have been let down in recent years will no doubt be left with their jaws wide open after this news, as the newly announced Sonic Mania is going back to its two dimensional roots through what can only be described as a remix blending re-imagined classic stages with new zones and gameplay twists.

Set to feature the three playable characters we all know and love, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, Sega’s new retro-style entry is a collaboration between themselves, Christian Whitehead (best known for using his Retro Engine to bring the Mega Drive classics to touchscreen devices), Headcannon and also PagodaWest Games (who also helped with the previous mobile offerings under the direction of Sonic Team’s leader, Takashi Iizuka). Needless to say from the short trailer of the game, Sega may have finally got it right. Having clearly listened to the fans this upcoming release looks set to be everything we’ve ever wanted since the blue hedgehog’s departure from the 16-bit era.

Sonic Mania is due to be released in Spring 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, however, there’s no word on release for any of Nintendo systems as of yet.

As mentioned though, this wasn’t the only news Sega had to offer Sonic fans. The second game announced at SDCC was Sonic Generations 2 (aka Project Sonic 2017), another coming straight from Sonic Team who previously worked on Sonic Colours and the original Sonic Generations. Not much is known about this title, apart from its respective trailer and a release date of holiday 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo NX. To further compliment these two titles too, Sega also proudly announced that Sonic will also be making an appearance in Lego Dimensions too.
