GTA 6 is so big, Rockstar doesn’t “know that there’s anybody on the team that knows all of it”

August 31, 2026 / admin / retro news

You probably don’t need to be told that GTA 6 is big. Rockstar sandboxes are known for their size and depth, and this one seems like it’ll be the biggest of the bunch by a wide margin. So much so, the studio doesn’t think a single member of the team has seen every corner of Leonida.

Chatting about the blockbuster release with IGN, Rob Nelson, the head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar, spoke about the philosophy underpinning the map and all the various things you can do. “I think the challenge for us on this game is the same as it is on any new game for us,” he explains.

“How do we evolve and build upon the good things we have done before in all the ways these things need to evolve,” he adds, “but at the same time ensure that the game still has everything that made the previous games in this series resonate with people?”

That’s a tricky thing to do. No doubt Rockstar wants GTA 6 to feel fresh and contemporary, without completely eschewing the ideas that have carried the series this far. Chaos, comedy, and constant pull to explore are hallmarks of the franchise, and have been since the very first entry.

That last part is key, and the team appears to have spent the 13 years since GTA 5 well in terms of providing us with things to do. “The game is so big, I don’t know that there’s anybody on the team that knows all of it,” Nelson says.

Normally I’d balk at such a statement, but he’s likely correct in this instance. Leonida seems big, and between just getting around and all the side-quests, I’ve little doubt there’s an ungodly amount to see and do, to the point that it’ll take hundreds to uncover all of it. And it all kicks off in November – at long last.

GTA 6 became too realistic for even Rockstar so the devs had to cut a system for restocking Jason and Lucia’s fridge to “find the right balance between realism and ease of play”
